Transmission employees from Great River Energy came together at the cooperative’s Maple Grove office for an expanded Safety Day, which included two days of learning, connection and reinforcing a strong safety culture.

The annual event grew from one day to two this year, creating more time for meaningful conversations and hands-on learning. Day one set the tone with two motivational speakers, followed by an evening social event. On day two, participants split into smaller groups and rotated through six interactive sessions designed to keep safety top of mind.
Safety Day is dedicated to strengthening Great River Energy’s safety culture and recognizing the role each employee plays in keeping themselves and their coworkers safe.
“This event is a celebration of all the work our employees do,” said Chelsey Wildman, manager of safety and human performance. “Safety is a collective journey, rooted in resilient minds, strengthened by practical leadership and sustained through clear communication. When we embrace real-world challenges, foster a culture of trust and stay vigilant to hazards, we empower every person to lead, learn and return home safely today, tomorrow and always.”

The first day featured Glen Stevens, who specializes in helping electric cooperative leaders build resilience, mental wellness and peak performance using neuroscience and practical leadership strategies. He was joined by Jason Middleton, a journeyman lineman from Wisconsin and lead mobile training instructor at Missouri Valley JATC, who shared insights on leadership and the responsibilities that come with it.
Day two shifted the focus to practical, everyday safety. Sessions covered topics such as chainsaw safety, arc-rated clothing, and asbestos and crystalline silica hazards. Participants also took part in a hands-on challenge that emphasized communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills that are critical both on and off the job.
