The year-long expansion of Great River Energy’s New Prague Service Center was recently completed, adding 3,500 square feet of office and meeting space in addition to 17,500 square feet of heated shop to support new heavy equipment and materials. This project doubled the size of the previous space.
The expanded garage will house both existing and new heavy equipment used by transmission to service regional assets, including a new crane and high-voltage bucket truck. The updated office space will accommodate increased staff in field services, transmission construction and maintenance, safety and other departments.

The new office space also includes a large meeting room designed to accommodate up to 40 people, establishing a dedicated southern regional training space for field crews. Energy-efficient building systems, expanded telecommunication and network systems along with advanced fire suppression enable this location to set a new benchmark for resilient, efficient operations in the region.
“The energy-efficient systems, fire suppression and expanded workspace demonstrate our commitment to building facilities that support both our employees and member-owners,” said Great River Energy Manager of Facilities Chris Campbell.
Great River Energy is preparing for more work in the southern part its service territory in Minnesota due to regional transmission projects. The upgraded garage and office space allows New Prague’s 16 employees to work safely and efficiently, whether maintaining existing assets or preparing new equipment for the field.
“With more transmission projects coming to the southern region, this facility positions us to be ready — not just with space for equipment, but with room to grow our people and capabilities,” said Great River Energy Director of Transmission Services Mary Hvistendahl.
