Great River Energy’s Elk River nesting box falcons

Since 2007, 34 falcons have fledged from the Elk River nesting box. A few of those falcons have been spotted around Minnesota:

  • Elizabeth, a 2011 GRE fledge, nested at a Delta Airlines hangar at Minneapolis International Airport last spring and produced two females
  • Bullet, a 2014 GRE fledge, has nested at the Colonnade Building in Golden Valley, Minn. for the last two years, producing 6 young
  • River, a 2015 GRE fledge was spotted at Xcel Energy’s Sherburne County Plant, in Becker, Minn. in February

Great River Energy hosts a peregrine falcon nesting box atop Elk River Energy Recovery Station. This is a perfect site for a nesting box because it is located in a peregrine falcon migratory flyway. The site, beside the Mississippi River, is also a draw because the birds prefer to nest in high locations near water.

Our 2018 season

Two adult falcons took up residence in the Elk River nesting box in late February. Brooklyn, the male, returned to this site for a fourth consecutive year. The female, Breezy, was new to the neighborhood. She fledged from a nest box in Oak Park Heights, Minn. in 2015.

The pair produced four eggs in early April and all four hatched in early May. The four eyasses were banded by representatives from the Raptor Resource Project in late May. They were identified and deemed healthy.

There were 3 females and 1 male. Names: Norah (f), Elsie Rose (f), Grace Marie (f) and Joey (m). All four successfully fledged from the nesting box in late June.
