Midwest grid prepared for summer

The organization that monitors the region’s electric grid projects there are adequate power reserves to meet demand for electricity this summer.

The Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) expects summer demand to peak at 125 gigawatts (GW), with 152 GW of available capacity.

The system’s summer peak demand forecast was reviewed during the recent Summer Readiness Workshop, a part of MISO’s reliability planning efforts.

MISO will closely monitor the grid during summer, as the season brings unique challenges such as abnormal weather and higher than average electric load.

MISO is an independent, not-for-profit organization that delivers safe, cost-effective electric power across 15 U.S. states and the Canadian province of Manitoba. MISO operates one of the world’s largest energy markets with more than $29 billion in annual gross market energy transactions.
