Investing in the grid - Great River Energy

Investing in the grid

For generations, our members have counted on us to provide reliable, affordable power to light homes, drive businesses and keep our communities connected to each other and the world. Today, as we see remarkable changes in both the ways we create and use electricity, the demands on our energy system are greater than ever. That’s why we’re not just preparing for the future – we are embracing the opportunities it brings.

Extreme weather, growing energy needs and aging infrastructure are challenging the limits of the electric grid. In response, we’re reimagining how power moves –from innovative upgrades to our energy network, to creating new partnerships with neighboring providers that will help us leverage the evolving, flexible mix of traditional and renewable energy resources.

Now is the time for innovation and teamwork. With our member-owners, communities and partners, we’re creating a smarter, more sustainable energy future for the Midwest.

Reliable power when and where you need it

A consistent power supply without disruption is vital to the health, safety and productivity of our communities. That’s why we’re investing in innovative solutions to futureproof our system – by assessing our current infrastructure and anticipating future demands, technologies and resources. These efforts will help us build a more reliable and secure energy future for everyone.

An energy grid that works for all

Efficient electric transmission infrastructure must ensure that electricity is always available to our members, no matter the weather, the hour, the season or how the power is being generated. A robust and flexible system meets all members’ needs at any time, and new connections help maintain reliability by linking customers with power generation.

Electricity = the power of possibilities

Electric use in the Upper Midwest is expected to grow significantly in the coming decades. This increased energy demand growth is expected to be driven by:

• New and expanded manufacturing

• The electrification of heating and cooling, appliances and transportation, along with additional devices within homes and businesses

• Expanded technology for data centers and artificial intelligence (AI) applications

Additionally, investments in continuing to develop a flexible transmission grid are essential to ensure the electricity produced by new generation resources can be delivered to energy consumers.

Home-grown energy

Producing and delivering electricity generated in the Midwest provides energy for members, communities, and local economies. Expanding access to affordable energy can support energy security and contribute to economic development. Investing in local energy solutions may also generate employment in various industries, supporting workforce development in the region.
