Co-op employee appointed to state electricity board

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz along with Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan recently announced the appointment of an electric cooperative employee to the state Board of Electricity.

Steve Haiby is manager of energy services at Lake Region Electric Cooperative (LREC), one of Great River Energy’s 28 member-owner cooperatives. Haiby has more than 33 years of experience in the electric utility industry, 22 of them spent with LREC in various roles.

“When I saw this position become available, it intrigued me,” Haiby said. “I never thought I would serve on the state Board of Electricity, but I am excited to use this opportunity to ensure the safe installations of electric systems.”

The Board of Electricity adopts and amends the electrical code and licensing rules for the electrical industry and issues final interpretations of the electrical code. When looking for people to fill seats on this board, Walz and Flanagan seek qualified and diverse individuals who are passionate about using their knowledge, skills and lived experiences to serve the state of Minnesota.

“I am looking forward to working with the current Board of Electricity members to continue the high level of electrical wiring standards that Minnesota is known for,” Haiby said.

Haiby, of Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, will serve as the rural areas representative. His term began Oct. 6 and expires Dec. 31, 2023.
