Power plant employee assists fuel truck driver in distress
While a fuel truck driver was making a delivery at Great River Energy’s Elk River Peaking Station in late January, he spoke to Howard Pappenfus, peaking plant operator/technician, and mentioned he was having chest pain and was going to sit in his truck.
Pappenfus immediately recognized the signs of a potential heart attack and took decisive action. He contacted Great River Energy’s control room and directed them to call 911 right away, then joined the driver in the truck to assess his condition and keep him calm.
Pappenfus knew that when someone doesn’t feel well, they frequently retreat to a place they feel comfortable — often to avoid attention or embarrassment. He didn’t dismiss it or leave the driver alone. He stayed with him until first responders arrived on site and took the driver to the hospital.
Pappenfus’ heroic efforts were recognized when Great River Energy’s Preston Walsh, supervising manager of Minnesota generation, presented him with the Good Neighbor Program’s Award of Merit. The Good Neighbor Program is a volunteer community service program at Great River Energy that recognizes individuals who offer a helping hand in the communities the cooperative serves. The Award of Merit is presented to employees who act on a situation with more than a simple radio call or a momentary stop for simple assistance.
“Howard’s quick recognition, calm presence and follow-through ensured the driver received the medical attention he needed during a serious situation,” Walsh said.
