The fourth annual Great River Energy Minnesota Paddling Opener, held June 13-15, was the event’s largest yet — marking the first year under its new name and drawing over 500 participants and spectators from across the United States and beyond.
Paddlers selected from five courses ranging in distance from 145 miles to the 5-mile “Root Beer Float,” which was this year’s most popular event with 65 registrants.
Participants paddled solo, tandem, in teams of three or four, and in relay teams. They arrived in a wide range of self-powered boats, including kayaks, canoes, stand-up paddleboards, surf skis, custom boats and outrigger canoes.
In total, 164 people competed in timed divisions while 103 participants enjoyed a recreational paddle tour. The event concluded with a post-paddle party at the finish line for participants and volunteers featuring vendor booths and live music.
