New title sponsorship connects co-ops with river communities

Minnesota Paddling Opener brings people to the Mississippi River

Great River Energy was recently named title sponsor of an event that ties together the great Minnesota outdoors, the Mississippi River and portions of its member-owner service territory.

The Minnesota Paddling Opener’s 5-mile Root Beer Float is an accessible activity for families, high school students and newcomers to paddling.

The Minnesota Paddling Opener is an annual celebration that attracts hundreds of paddlers — people who kayak, canoe or stand-up paddle board — to the Mississippi River to mark the beginning of the summer paddling season.

The event offers a variety of activities such as tours, races and relays for both novice and seasoned river-goers ranging from 5 to 145 miles. Most of this year’s activities take place on Sunday, June 15, and all routes lead to Mississippi Point Park in Champlin. Participants and spectators can attend the free Minnesota Paddling Expo, which will showcase river-related organizations, live music and paddling businesses as well as the opportunity to cheer for participants as they reach the finish line archway.

“This title sponsorship opportunity allows us to showcase that ‘river’ is more than just part of our name — it’s part of so many of the communities we serve together with our member-owner cooperatives,” said David Ranallo, director of culture, communications and strategy at Great River Energy. “We’re proud to support an event that connects people, our member-owners and celebrates the power of community.”

A standout event is the 5-mile “Root Beer Float,” an accessible activity for families, high school students and newcomers to paddling. Participants will need to bring their own self-powered boats, or rent a canoe or kayak, for the estimated 75-minute to 2-hour activity. Upon completion, participants will receive a complimentary bottle of root beer, courtesy of the Dorothy Molter Museum, honoring the legacy of the “Root Beer Lady” of the Boundary Waters.

“Great River Energy’s commitment to community engagement and environmental stewardship aligns seamlessly with our mission to promote paddle sports and appreciation for Minnesota’s waterways,” said Todd Foster, one of the creators of Two Paddles, the organization behind the Minnesota Paddling Opener.

In addition to the Root Beer Float, the Minnesota Paddling Opener offers:

  • Mississippi River 12, 20, and 43 Races and Tours: Competitive races of varying lengths, with non-competitive tour divisions and relay options.
  • Mississippi River 145: An ultra-endurance race from Brainerd to Champlin, with a 50-hour completion window starting at 3 p.m. on Friday, June 13. A 135-mile recreational tour option and the MR 145 Relay for teams are also available.
