Great River Energy will be rebuilding the “HW” 69-kV transmission line in Cass County to help ensure continued reliable electric service to the area. This 12.5-mile line, which was built in the early 1950s, needs to be rebuilt due to its age, condition and wire size.
Beginning at the Birch Lake Substation in Hackensack, Minn., the line runs east to 40th Ave NW then north to County State Aid Highway 5. Then it runs east along County State Aid Highway 5 for 7.5 miles to Child Lake. Here the line turns and runs cross-country south and east to County State Aid Highway 11 and continues to the end point at the Wabedo Substation.
Great River Energy is planning to rebuild the transmission line along the existing centerline. Minor alignment changes may be discussed with individual landowners.
The transmission line will be rebuilt using single wood poles, generally 70 to 80 feet above ground, placed 350 to 400 feet apart. Some taller specialty poles and longer or shorter spans may be required. Directional changes or angles will require guy wires and anchors to stabilize poles.
