Industry group discusses game changers

At the Great Plains Institute’s 20-year Energy Innovation Celebration in late September, Great River Energy Vice President and Chief Transmission Officer Will Kaul was a panelist during a discussion about game changers forcing transformation in the energy industry.

The panel discussion focused on rapidly decreasing costs for solar energy and energy storage, improved range and refueling time for electric vehicles and new business models that could help achieve a sustainable, low-carbon energy system by aligning financial incentives with those goals.

Among other things, rapid developments in these areas continue to move the energy industry from the fossil fuels-based, centralized power system of yesterday to a system where energy resources, such as wind and solar, are more distributed and intermittent.

Kaul is a member of the Great Plains Institute’s board of directors.
