Taking care of our valued employees

We work hard to provide our employees with the safest and healthiest working environments, to give them opportunities to volunteer and serve the community, and to compensate them fairly for their hard work and dedication.

Health and wellness initiatives

Great River Energy offers wellness programs and solid benefits to help employees and their families live their best lives possible.

Employees, spouses or domestic partners, and dependents have access to a broad range of medical plans; Great River Energy pays a significant portion of the cost to ensure all employees receive affordable and comprehensive health care.

Great River Energy also helps employees manage health care costs by offering healthy lifestyle education opportunities. The lifestyle choices employees make affect their health and quality of life – both today and in the future. Better lifestyle choices also affect the amount Great River Energy and its employees spend on health care costs.

Teams of employees in Minnesota and North Dakota, known as our wellness committees, work to educate and inspire employees on health and wellness issues. The groups regularly sponsor wellness events for employees.

Wellness events include:

  • An onsite bike tune-up
  • Team and individual challenges at our onsite wellness centers
  • Company walks
  • Samples of healthy snacks
  • Education opportunities on stress, healthy diets, etc.
  • A family fun run and walk

A generous incentive for living a healthy lifestyle

Great River Energy offers employees a health management program with a generous participation incentive.

Health management program participants:

  • Complete a health risk questionnaire and health screening
  • Participate in education wellness events
  • Track healthy activities such as exercise
  • Receive up to $1,000 incentive after successful program completion
  • We have had outstanding participation in the program
  • Our overall group results have directly contributed to health care premium increases consistently lower than national averages. Our cumulative group results show that we are moving in the right direction with improvements in blood pressure, total cholesterol and overall weight.

A healthiest employer award winner

Once again, Great River Energy was recognized as a healthiest employer by the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal. For the fourth year running, we were named the healthiest employer among companies employing 501-5,000 people. The award is part of the Healthiest Employers of the Twins Cities project, which was established to recognize Minnesota-based companies committed to creating a healthy workplace.

In 2015, we were named the 14th healthiest workplace in the nation by the Healthiest 100 Workplaces in America organization.

Ensuring our employees’ safety

Generating and delivering electricity can be a dangerous business, so Great River Energy ensures safety is paramount at all of its facilities.

Great River Energy goes to any length to ensure there are safeguards in place that protect our employees and members. Equally important is our culture of safety. Every employee is empowered to report safety concerns with the expectation that their concerns will be acted upon.

Employee voice

Great River Energy has a unique goal-setting process – one that seeks the input of employees at all levels of the organization. The Connect the Dots program seeks employee input on the organization’s strategic imperatives. Through a careful interview process, employees have the opportunity to provide feedback on draft strategies.

The goal is to learn if employees feel the strategies are achievable, if anything was overlooked, or if they have any other comments or concerns on the strategies. Employee feedback is incorporated into strategies before the board of directors’ strategic planning process.
